Lando Norris narrowly beat team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri for the top spot in the dying seconds of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who seized the points lead from Piastri by one point after his victory in the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks ago, topped the Melbourne-born driver by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Oscar Piastri had been the quickest of the McLaren pair throughout the hour before the sprint shootout scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the sole remaining contender in the points battle, lying 36 points Norris, ended up in 17th place as his Red Bull team followed a alternative strategy. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to go off, though minor, when he spun at corner four soon after starting. Tsunoda spun out over the exit kerbs before spinning across the run-off area, and was fortunate to escape with just a slight brush of the barrier. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the very end of the session, turning around through the high-speed Mergulho turn approaching the final bend on to the start-finish straight. The seven-time champion wrapped up in 19th, trailing team-mate Charles Leclerc. Norris and Piastri were well clear of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's car third fastest, over half a second off Piastri's pace. The Aston Martin of the Spanish driver was in fourth, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and the Williams of Sainz.
